Activity 18 – Interview Skills

Duration: 12 – 20 mins
Applicable Streams: Personal challenge, Leadership, Learning & Development, Workplace skills

Aim

In this activity you are aiming to:

Participate in an interview for an imaginary but feasible job as either the panel or the interviewee

Objectives

To do this, you will need to keep the following objectives in mind:

  1. Prepare questions, or responses to questions.
  2. Respond appropriately in an interview environment.
  3. Ask and answer questions as required.

The Why…

There’s no way of knowing when might be the next time you’re needed to participate in an interview – either as the interviewee or the interviewer. Both of these roles require planning and careful preparation, which this activity gives members a chance to practise.

Where do I start?

The How

Specific guidelines on how to tackle this activity.

This is a 4 person exercise:

  • The panel (3 people) needs to plan their questions
  • The Interviewee needs to answer those questions
  • Set up a panel with an imaginary but feasible job for the member and ask a series of likely questions.

Please note this is NOT a humorous exercise, or one to be taken lightly. Some people will want to do this activity as the interviewee, some as the interviewer, some as both at different times. The member must decide what will be most useful for them.

Bear in mind that part of the exercise is to show other people how questions may be answered – people choosing to be the ‘interviewee’ may be very experienced in this role and taking the role to show others how to respond to difficult questions. There also may be experienced interviewers in the group who are taking the interviewer role to demonstrate to others how to ask good/challenging/useful questions.

Variations:

  1. Participate as the interviewer
  2. Participate as the interviewee
  3. Provide the interviewee with prepared or impromptu questions
