Galactic Activity 20

Deliver a workshop focussed on an aspect of presentation skills. These workshops can be combined to be run as an event in your club to encourage first-time visitors

Activity 20 – In Depth Workshop

Duration: 8 – 10 mins
Applicable Streams: Personal challenge, Learning & Development, Workplace skills, Education, Technical,

Aim

In this activity you are aiming to:

Run an 8 – 10 minute in depth workshop for your club on an aspect of speaking or meetings Eg. Voice or vocal care and maintenance

Objectives

To do this, you will need to keep the following objectives in mind:

  1. Structure the workshop to ensure engaged learning will take place.
  2. Teach about an aspect of speaking or meetings.
  3. Include practical demonstrations and opportunities for practice activities.

The Why…

There’s an old say that you learn best by teaching – and this is the core reason for this activity! For this reason, you may wish to teach something you’ve learnt recently and think the members could benefit from.

Where do I start?

Choose a topic you’re familiar with, that you can teach in 8-10 minutes and will be useful for your audience. If you’re stuck for ideas, you may wish to poll the members of your club to see how many people know about your intended topics already, or what things they’d like to learn from you considering your expertise – so you can choose something that will really resonate with people.

The How

Specific guidelines on how to tackle this activity.

Structure the workshop in a learning format

Consider setting it up in the following best practice structure:

  1. What are you learning about today?
  2. Why is it important to learn about this topic? (What’s in it for them?)
  3. Explain the theory
  4. Demonstrate the theory in action
  5. Show the audience how it can be applied to their lives (the value in it for them)
  6. Recap and ask for questions from the audience.
  7. Provide a one-page handout highlighting the main points

Choose an aspect of speaking or meetings that you feel confident teaching others about, and that you think members could benefit from

Do a poll if you like, to ascertain what skills members would like to learn about.

Consider a topic that lends itself to demonstration and practising,

and that the members will be keen to get engaged with – there’s nothing worse than trying to engage people in a workshop who are not at all motivated! .

Variations:

  1. Prepared
  2. Impromptu

Tips and traps

TRAPS:

  • Planning too much for a 10 minute timeframe.
  • Doing workshops that have been done recently in the club, or topics that are ‘old hat’ or too ‘beginner level’ for the audience.

TIPS:

  • Choose something you’re familiar and confident with – unless you really want a challenge – then choose something you’ve learnt recently and are keen to share with others!
